Daily Meds XII: Early Days of Spiritual Practice

Daily Meditations, or Daily Meds, are a collection of quick-hitting thoughts meant to help you focus your own personal meditative practice each morning. Read the Daily Med, but don’t dwell on it too long. Take the feeling into a fifteen minute meditation and see how your outlook slowly improves each day.

You Will Rebel”

The early days of spiritual practice and mental health changes will feel like a rabid bear chained to a post. It will look scary and fierce, and you’re sure it will consume you if it ever escapes. Your mind will rebel, it will flail, it will find creative new ways to attack you. A big part of you will want to quit and just let the damn thing off the chain, after all you’ve lived with it your whole life and know it’s behavior. Maybe you can reason with it and apologize if you just let it off now, rather than it getting loose and being doubly angry at you. Do not give up under any circumstance, because the victory you seek completely changes your entire existence. Your mind just needs a little positive reinforcement to prove to itself that this new way of living can be attained and sustained. The bear is your animalistic spirit fighting for survival in a world that it sees as cruel and unflinching. Yes, the world can be cruel, but that doesn’t mean it is always cruel. The power you feel once you achieve enlightenment will make the bear look like a stuffed animal, and why would you ever feel the need to bargain with a plush bear? Stay the course and leave the damned thing chained.
