Daily Meds XIV: Panic Attacks

Daily Meditations, or Daily Meds, are a collection of quick-hitting thoughts meant to help you focus your own personal meditative practice each morning. Read the Daily Med, but don’t dwell on it too long. Take the feeling into a fifteen minute meditation and see how your outlook slowly improves each day.

The feeling of panic is the absolute closest thing to true enlightenment that you can experience, until the day you understand what panic accomplishes, at which point you never need it again. It is the final barrier to entry for surrender, for allowing yourself to be swept away by the flow of existence. It is the universal nudge towards something greater. When that day comes, you begin ascending the mountain.

The moment of panic totally encapsulates the mind and body. Chemicals rush through the body as such magnificent speeds that it feels like you are dying, which, in a sense, is exactly what’s happening. It is a death of ego, of compulsive thought, of judgment patterns. You are summoning more energy in that moment than you have trained yourself to handle, and are therefore burning the nagging thoughts that weigh you down daily in the fire of pure focus.

Your childhood traumas mean nothing in this moment of intensity; nor does your bitterness over some perceived slight, or the ramblings of spiritual teachers mean anything, either. You are fully and completely invested in the present moment because that moment has suddenly demanded your undivided attention. All of your body’s resources are firmly directed at that one solitary moment because without them, there may not be another moment. Seek out the panic, seek out the pain, seek out the difficulty, and then overcome it; laugh at it; breathe in life and exhale death. It was never the panic that you needed, but rather the focus. You came to the absolute brink and survived. In that death you found life.
